Iowa Permit to Carry Class
Permit To Carry classes are instructed by the Training Specialists Firearm
Instructors, NRA Certified Instructors, and certified Iowa Law Enforcment Officers.
The class is 8 hours long and is authorized by the Polk
County Sheriffs Office. The course consists of the following segments:
Segment I: Training Specialists, NRA First Steps Course
Lesson 1: Handgun knowledge and safe handling Lesson II: Ammunition knowledge Lesson III: Fundamentals of Handgun Shooting Lesson IV: Code of Iowa Laws Chapter 724
Segment II: Training Specialists First Shots
Lesson I: Firing Positions Lesson II: Range Safety Procedures
Lesson III: Firing The First Shots
Exams
You will be given 2 written tests. Each student must get a 75% score to pass.
- Questions consisting of: Firearms knowledge, proper use of ammunition, and the fundamentals
of handgun shooting
- Test on Chapter 724 of the Code of Iowa consisting of:
- Carry Weapons-with or without a permit
- Duty to carry permit to carry weapons
- Issuance of permit to carry
- Permit to acquire permit
- Access
to loaded firearms by children
Segment III: Shooting Courses
First Shots Exercises
The student will shoot up to 50 rounds learning firearm marksmanship skills using several shooting
exercises such as:
Shooting at the 5 yard line using the bench rest postition one shot at a
time. Shooting at the 5 yard line using the standing position. Shooting ath the 9-15-25 yard
lines from the standing position. Practice 6 shots in 8 seconds to get ready for the qualifying
course.
Qualifying with Firearms for Permit to Carry
Each student will fire 48 rounds timed at 5,9,15 and 25 yards. Each student
must get a 75% score to pass.
You will need to bring the following:
- Firearm- .38 Cal Revolver (minimum 6 shot) and up, or 9mm Semi-Auto and up. (No .22 Caliburs).
- 100 rounds (2 boxes) Manufactured Ammo (No reloads).
- Eye Protection (if you wear glasses you can use those)
- Ear Protection
Utah & Florida Non-Resident Carry Concealed Weapons Permit
This course also qualifies students for endorsements to obtain CCW Permits in the States of Utah and
Florida. These three CCW permits, (Iowa, Utah and Florida) allows the permit holder to carry in
a total 24 states. Call or e-mail us with questions on these endorsements.

Advanced Courses
After completion of the basic CCW course you will be able to take the NRA Personal
Protection in the Home Advanced Course. The advanced course will teach defensive shooting, strategies for
home safety, responding to a violent confrontation, and loading and unloading skills under pressured circumstances.
